John Constable Art

One of the most famous and best-loved English artists is Sir John Constable (1776 – 1837). A Romantic artist who painted many landscapes, Constable had a flair for the portrayal of weather -- especially rain. In fact, certain John Constable paintings have an impressionistic air, similar to those of fellow artist J. M. W. Turner.

David Lucas (1802 – 1881) was a skilled draughtsman and engraver, who was commissioned to make engravings after a collection of Constable paintings. Constable and Lucas worked very closely together in the execution of these prints; in fact, theirs was one on the great partnerships of art history, for David Lucas had an uncanny ability to translate Constable's paintings into engravings. We are pleased to offer many of these fine prints from the famous "English Landscape Scenery" portfolio.
