Henri Matisse Jazz
During the last years of his life, when Henri Matisse was in failing health and no longer able to paint, he took delight in cutting colored paper with a large scissors and attaching these cut-outs (découpages) to support sheets. The bright, bold colors and whimsical shapes were quite popular and remain much loved.
The Matisse Jazz portfolio is considered by many to be the finest artist's book (livre d'artiste) ever created. It is certainly among the rarest and most valuable, with the original 1947 edition almost impossible to find. We're pleased to offer works from the 1983 re-creation edition, issued in New York by The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA).
