The Last Works of Matisse
In the later years of his life, physical weakness made it difficult for Matisse to paint. He experimented with paper cut-outs (découpage) by taking different colored papers and cutting them with scissors into various shapes, which he glued onto a larger sheet of paper. These constructions were used as models to make lithographs and the whimsical designs were hugely popular. In 1958 Paris publisher Teriade issued a special edition of his art revue Verve as a tribute to the artist. Here we feature the Last Works of Matisse from Verve issue 35-36.
