German Expressionist Art Prints
German Expressionist art, generally accepted as occurring during the first three decades of the
twentieth century, was applied to a variety of media including dance, theater, architecture, film,
music and painting. Early German Expressionist artists such as Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and Erich
Heckel, unlike the earlier German impressionists, weren't attempting to portray the objective
reality of the world around them, but rather the subjective reality of the feelings brought out by
their surroundings. Color and scale were typically distorted in German Expressionist paintings and
compositions were often simplistic, employing thick paint, bold colors and free, loosely-applied
brushstrokes.
