Antoni Tapies Lithographs & Prints

One of the most well-known European artists of the post-World War II generation, Antoni Tapies was born in Barcelona, Spain in 1923 and lived mostly in that city until passing at age 88. Suffering from tuberculosis and surviving a serious heart attack while still in his teens, Tapies spent two years confined to a health facility during which time he developed a deep interest in drawing/painting. His earlier works are said to have been strongly influenced by Picasso and Van Gogh. In 1948 he helped found Dau al Set, a group with ties to Surrealism and Dadaism. From here, Tapies began working in what became known as pintura matèrica, incorporating non-artistic materials like rags, paper and string into his paintings. Many Tapies lithographs were executed in the Tachisme style (Tachism was an important European variation of the Abstract Expressionist art movement).
